Optimisation Starts with a Reason to Choose You

Every business wants more visitors.

More enquiries.
More customers.
The natural question often becomes:

“How do we improve our SEO?”

It’s a reasonable question.
But I increasingly think there’s an even more important one.

“Why should somebody choose us in the first place?”

Because optimisation doesn’t create a compelling business.
It helps people discover one.

Visibility Isn’t the Same as Value

Recent changes in search rankings have sparked countless discussions about algorithms, AI, E-E-A-T and technical SEO.
Those topics matter.

But they also made me reflect on something else.

Some websites may have lost visibility not because their technical SEO suddenly became poor, but because they struggled to communicate something more fundamental:

Why should I choose you instead of someone else?
A search engine can help someone find your website.

Only your business can give them a reason to stay.

Before Optimising, Understand Your Basis of Competition

One question I find increasingly useful when reviewing a website is this:
Has the website clearly explained its basis of competition?

In other words:

  • Why does this business exist?
  • What problem does it solve particularly well?
  • What makes it different?
  • What capabilities does it possess that others may not?
  • Why should somebody trust it?

Many websites answer: “Here’s what we sell.”
Fewer answer: “Here’s why we’re worth choosing.”

Those are very different conversations.

Strategy Before Optimisation

Recently I’ve been helping redesign an e-commerce website.
At first glance, it appeared to be a fairly typical online catalogue.

Products.
Categories.
Prices.

Technically, there was little fundamentally wrong with it.
The opportunity wasn’t simply improving metadata or page structure.

It was helping visitors understand:

  • why the business deserved their trust,
  • what experience they could expect,
  • how the team could guide them,
  • and why choosing this business would be different from buying elsewhere.

Those aren’t simply SEO improvements.
They’re strategic improvements.

The optimisation naturally follows.

Capabilities Create Confidence

Businesses often compete on price because it’s the easiest difference to communicate.
But price is rarely the only reason people choose.

Sometimes it’s expertise.
Sometimes it’s experience.
Sometimes it’s convenience.
Sometimes it’s craftsmanship.
Sometimes it’s guidance.
Sometimes it’s simply making a difficult decision easier.

Understanding your own capabilities helps define your strategic position.
Understanding how customers perceive those capabilities determines whether your website communicates them effectively.

SEO Amplifies Good Strategy

This is one reason I don’t see SEO, conversion optimisation and business strategy as isolated disciplines.

A well-optimised page can attract visitors.
But if the business hasn’t clearly communicated its value, optimisation has very little to amplify.

The strongest websites rarely succeed because of one ranking factor.
They succeed because many elements work together.

Clear positioning.
Useful content.
Logical structure.
Trust.
Technical quality.
User experience.

Each strengthens the others.

Final Thought

Perhaps one of the biggest optimisation mistakes isn’t poor technical SEO.

It’s assuming optimisation begins with search engines.

I increasingly believe it begins much earlier.
It begins by understanding why somebody should choose your business.

Once that becomes clear, many other decisions become easier.

The content becomes easier to write.
The website becomes easier to structure.
Marketing becomes easier to target.
SEO becomes easier to plan.

Because optimisation has finally been given something meaningful to optimise.

People don’t choose the most optimised business.
They choose the business that best convinces them it understands their problem and can solve it.
