Understanding people is still your greatest competitive advantage.
Last week, I explored why AI didn’t invent clarity, it simply amplified the importance of it: https://awe.cauchisavona.com/ai-didnt-invent-clarity/
AI simply amplified the importance of principles that have always mattered: helping people quickly understand whether you can solve their problem.
That naturally raises another question.
If AI is becoming increasingly capable, where does good digital strategy still begin?
In my experience, it begins exactly where it always has:
With people.
People Don’t Search for Keywords
One of the biggest misconceptions in digital marketing, is that SEO starts with keywords.
Of course, keywords matter.
They help us understand search intent.
But people don’t wake up thinking: “I need a keyword.”
* They wake up with a problem to solve.
* A question to answer.
* A decision to make.
* A need to fulfil.
The keyword is simply how that need is expressed.
Understanding the person behind the search has always been the real starting point.
Search Visibility Is Only Half the Journey
Appearing in search results is important.
But visibility alone has never guaranteed business success.
Once someone lands on your website, a different question begins:
“Can these people actually help me?”
This is where SEO and Conversion Optimisation stop being separate disciplines.
Search helps people find you.
Trust helps them choose you.
The strongest websites do both.
Think Beyond the Search Query
Take portrait photography as an example.
Keyword research might suggest phrases like:
- portrait photography
- portrait poses
- professional portraits
Useful information.
But photography experience reveals a different conversation is more often on a photography customer’s mind.
Many clients aren’t wondering about poses.
They’re thinking:
- “I don’t like having my photo taken.”
- “I never know what to do in front of the camera.”
- “I hope I don’t look awkward.”
Those aren’t keyword problems.
They’re human problems.
And when we answer those questions, something interesting happens.
We don’t just create better content.
We create content that naturally aligns with what search engines and AI systems increasingly reward: relevance, trust, and usefulness.
Good SEO Has Always Been Human-Centred
Recent discussions often make it sound as though AI has completely rewritten the rules.
I don’t believe it has.
AI has become exceptionally good at analysing information.
- It can identify patterns.
- Suggest topics.
- Generate ideas.
- Improve productivity.
But a human, aware of the website context, still needs to decide:
- Who are we trying to help?
- What problem are they really trying to solve?
- What questions remain unanswered?
- What would give them confidence to take the next step?
That’s where strategy begins.
Nothing Works in Isolation
One lesson I’ve learnt over the years is that websites rarely underperform because of one isolated issue.
Traffic may be healthy.
But trust is weak.
Messaging may be clear.
But the next step isn’t obvious.
SEO may improve.
But enquiries stay flat.
Each part influences the others.
Looking at them in isolation often leads to isolated improvements.
Looking at them together creates stronger business outcomes.
The Best SEO Strategy Starts Before Keywords
Rather than starting with:
“Which keywords should we rank for?”
I find it more useful to ask:
- Who is this website trying to help?
- What are visitors hoping to achieve?
- What’s making them hesitate?
- What would help them trust this business?
Once those answers become clearer, the rest begins to follow.
The content becomes easier to write.
The page structure becomes easier to organise.
Calls to action become more meaningful.
Even keyword research becomes easier because it’s now guided by genuine human understanding rather than isolated search volume.
Final Thought
AI will continue to evolve.
Search engines will continue to evolve.
New platforms will appear.
But one principle has remained remarkably consistent.
People don’t choose businesses because they found a keyword.
They choose businesses because they feel understood.
Perhaps that’s why the best SEO strategy has never really been about search engines.
It’s always started with understanding people.
